IHLS Offices Closed for Labor Day

All IHLS offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 1, 2014. Delivery and Talking Book Services will not be provided.

See our Office Hours page for a listing of IHLS Holidays.

Statewide Delivery Data Collection

One of the recommendations from the Illinois State Library’s Delivery Advisory Committee was a physical count of all items being handled via delivery. The recommendation was that a statewide sampling be taken for one week each quarter. Both Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS) and Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) are fully committed to this recommendation. We are asking our member libraries to partner with us to assist in the data collection process. This will help us ensure that the delivery statistics we provide to the Illinois State Library are accurate.

When you start packing your items for Monday, September 8 pickup, please count all items in each of the delivery containers that are being shipped from your library, and complete the form. (You will also receive paper copies of this form from your IHLS Delivery Manager.) Once completed, place the form on top of the items inside each bin/tub/bag. IHLS will do all of the tabulation and data input. Follow this same procedure through Friday, September 12.

The dates for fiscal year 2015’s statistical sampling are:

  • September 8 - 12, 2014
  • November 17 – 21, 2014
  • February 2 – 6, 2015
  • May 11 – 15, 2015

On behalf of IHLS and RAILS delivery staff, thank you for your participation in this statewide count. Do not hesitate to contact your delivery hub manager or Susan Palmer, Operations Director (spalmer@illinoisheartland.org | 618-656-3216 ext. 409) with any questions or concerns.

Library Directors’ Chat - Wednesday

The next Directors’ Chat is Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. This is an electronic workshop that will provide IHLS member library directors an opportunity to ask questions, make comments, and communicate with the hosts and each other, without leaving their home library. This will be a monthly event, held on the first Wednesday of each month.

A demonstration of collectionHQ will be held on Thursday, September 11, from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. in person at RAILS Burr Ridge service center and by videoconference at scheduled locations. Reaching Forward South

Have you been looking for Reaching Forward South’s conference information? Trying to book your stay at Northfield Inn for September? Because of increased competition in the fall of 2014 for conference space in Springfield the conference has been moved to April 17, 2015. There will be a new venue, the University of Illinois Springfield. With this extra time they are revamping their topics, schedule, and website to bring you relevant support staff workshops, continuing education, and staff development. The planning committee anticipates having the new website, speaker schedules, and registration ready by December. We look forward to a great conference in 2015! If you have any questions contact Michael Baumann, Director of the Toulon Public Library District, 309-286-5791 who is chair of the Reaching Forward South Planning Committee.

2015 Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Grant

The 2015 Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Grant application which is due on or before October 15 is available at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/grants/plpc_equalization.html.

This year there are two parts to the grant application — first is the application itself, found under Application Forms and Instructions and second is the Expenditure Report Forms. If you did not report the use of grant funds for 2013, you must use the 2013 form(s) and send as an attachment with your application. If you have already spent FY2014 grant funds received in the spring, you have the option of using the 2014 form(s) and reporting in October, or you can wait until next year. FY2014 funds must be encumbered by June 30, 2015 and expended by August 15, 2015.

As per the FY15 Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grant Requirements, Illinois public libraries must have at least one staff member attend an instructional course to fulfill the education and training requirement. To fulfill the technology requirements, at least one member of the library staff and at least one board member must attend an informational webinar or in-person session about The Edge Initiative.

If you have not yet fulfilled these requirements, public libraries applying for the FY2015 Per Capita Grant have the opportunity to satisfy both by viewing an information webinar. The webinar which includes instructions on the EDGE and the Public Library Per Capita application is available at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/grants/webinars/percap_grant_instruct.html

After viewing the webinar, carefully read the Instructions for Completing Fillable PDF Grant Forms http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/grants/grant-pdf-instructions.html. If you still have questions, do not hesitate to contact the Illinois State Library.
