This position is available starting July 1, 2012.  This is a 100%-time, twelve-month, visiting appointment, with an initial appointment for two years.

Duties and Responsibilities: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library is implementing the Primo Central web-scale discovery system (WDS); we are seeking a dynamic individual to spearhead the planning, implementation, and management of metadata creation/provision for this project.  The incumbent will participate in and help to lead the work of the WDS Implementation Team; design, test, and develop metadata creation, remediation and transformation workflows, search services, authority control and access technologies; and apply the appropriate metadata schemas to support the WDS. 

The Visiting Metadata Librarian for Web-Scale Discovery will:

  • Develop institutional best practices for the development, use, and reuse of metadata as an integral element in the Library’s search and discovery systems.
  • Lead and provide expertise and management relating to metadata production for description, access, administration and preservation of digital materials acquired or held by the Library.
  • Harvest metadata using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)
  • Integrate metadata from CONTENTdm, DSpace, Fedora, XTF, Olive, ARCHON, Voyager/VuFind (Online Public Access Catalogs), OCLC and other library systems into the Primo Central indexes. Create collection-level records and descriptions of various collections to be ingested into the WDS.
  • Facilitate metadata scheme specification and adaptation, including the selection of metadata schema, data elements, thesauri, crosswalks, and XSLT stylesheets to make hidden collections, databases and repositories accessible through the WDS.
  • Conduct research and write conference papers, journal articles, and technical reports, collaborating with other Library faculty and academic professionals to share best practices and research results in order to help develop an institutional research agenda on the role of search and discovery systems and participate in the Library’s research and development efforts.
  • Conduct user testing and other assessment activities.
  • Work collaboratively with other Library faculty in a variety of units engaged in both public service and technical service activities to investigate and develop tools and workflows for improving access to the Library’s collections.

The position will report to the Head of Content Access Management and work with the WDS implementation Team and Library departments, faculty, and staff. The WDS will play a key role in all Library services and activities, including reference services, collection access, technical services, and user studies.  The Primo Central WDS, as a search and discovery framework, will be integrated with existing Library search and discovery systems and the CARLI-supported online catalogs – WebVoyage and VuFind. The WDS will also contribute to digital library grant-funded research projects being conducted in the Library.

 The Library consists of multiple departmental libraries located across campus, as well as an array of central public, technical, and administrative service units. The Library also encompasses a variety of virtual service points and "embedded librarian" programs. The Content Access Management Unit, as a part of Technical Services Division, is responsible for providing cataloging and metadata records for library resources, including printed books, serials, e-books, electronic journals, digital collections, and resources in other formats, to support the library’s access services. 

ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science (or equivalent); Experience with and working knowledge of MARC, AACR2, and XML; Experience with one or more of these standards: Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS, CDWA, LIDO, or VRA; Knowledge of national cataloging standards; Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities; Ability to work in a collaborative team environment; Ability to work autonomously; Strong oral and written communication skills;; Applicant must be legally eligible to begin work within one month after the job is offered.

Minimum of one year post-Master’s degree experience working with metadata in a digital library environment; Experience in creating, editing, and transforming MARC and/or non-MARC metadata records; Experience with and working knowledge of collection-level metadata schemas; Experience with non-descriptive metadata standards/schemas;; Experience creating and using XSLT stylesheets; Experience with metadata issues related to the discovery of resources; Experience with user studies and surveys; Experience using XML and XML-related tools and technologies including XML Schema authoring tools and XSLT debugging tools, e.g., oXygen; Knowledge of Library Linked Open Data practices and related technologies, e.g., SKOS, RDF, RDFa; Experience with scripting and programming languages, e.g., JavaScript, VBScript, Perl, Python

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience.

Terms of Appointment:
Twelve month appointment; 24 vacation days per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative up to a maximum of 240 days) plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of member's salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
