The largest library consortia in the country coming soon to a library near you!

Edwardsville, Illinois – July 26, 2012 -- Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS) has chosen Polaris Library Systems of Syracuse, N.Y., to provide its next ILS system.  On Wednesday, Leslie Bednar, Executive Director of IHLS met with Bill Schickling and Jodi Bellenger of Polaris to sign the contract.

Illinois Heartland Library System covers 28,141 square miles in the southern half of Illinois. It is comprised of four former library systems (Lewis & Clark, Lincoln Trail, Rolling Prairie, and Shawnee). Before the merger on July 1, 2011, staff members and the LLSAP4 Working Group had already begun working on merging four separate automation systems into one.  Early next year all of their automated libraries will share the same database and catalog to become THE largest library consortia in the country: SHARE (Sharing Heartland’s Available Resources Equally) powered by Polaris Library Systems of Syracuse, N.Y.

Moving Forward TOGETHER

Fun Facts About IHLS Libraries!
IHLS has at least two of the oldest public libraries in Illinois – Edwardsville Public Library and Belleville Public Library. Edwardsville’s library was begun by a group of ladies who started a subscription library the year after Illinois became a state (1819). For a dime a month you could be a member. The collection traveled around – church pews, a store on Main Street, etc.  Andrew Carnegie gave $12,500 to Edwardsville to build a library in 1904/05 and the library was dedicated in 1906.

First IHLS Staff Day

On Thursday, June 28, we closed our four locations for the day and headed to Effingham for the first IHLS all-staff retreat. This was a wonderful opportunity for our staff to get together and get to know each other.  The primary focus of the day was customer service training and making a positive impact on our members. Rebecca A. Clark, Excelegy Consulting Group, presented "We Want to Be Wonderfully WOWful!" Disney’s customer service model.
