Ask Sens. Durbin and Kirk to Support Library Funding

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) is expected to mark-up (take a vote) on the FY 2013 LHHS budget on Tuesday, June 12. This budget is the source of federal funding for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as well as funding for school libraries.

You are receiving this e-mail because your senators, Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk, serve on this subcommittee. Please call Sen. Durbin at 202-224-2152 and Sen. Kirk at 202-224-2854 today and ask them to support the following in the LHHS FY 2013 Appropriations bill:

1. Level funding of the LSTA at $184.7 million for FY 2013.

2. Level funding of the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program at $28.6 million for FY 2013.

IHLS LLSAP Merger
There is quite a bit happening with the proposed merger of the four legacy LLSAP systems in IHLS and the proposed migration to Polaris.  Below are just a FEW highlights:

  • The IHLS governing board has declared their intent to support one LLSAP in IHLS, which will be SHARE (Sharing Heartland’s Available Resources Equally).
  • As of May 9, all four legacy systems' Users' Groups have conducted their meetings and voted to merge with SHARE, effective July 1, 2012.
  • In January Polaris was chosen as the final vendor.
  • All current members that choose to join SHARE will migrate at the same time.
  • The goal is to complete the migration early in 2013.

Visit the migration site to peruse the most up-to-date information available regarding the LLSAP merger. You can find the site at: migration.illinoisheartland.org.

Last chance to vote for IHLS Board of Directors

If your library would like to vote for the IHLS Board of Directors, please remember that your vote must be cast by the end of the day on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. The instructions are listed below.

Please read carefully: The link to the IHLS Board of Directors election ballot is listed below. All voting is done electronically via this survey. EACH MEMBER LIBRARY CAN VOTE ONLY ONCE. Please ensure that only one person at your library responds to this survey. If your system membership is shared among multiple locations or branches, be sure that only one person votes on behalf of ALL combined locations. A preview ballot is available on the IHLS website here . Prior to voting via this survey, please consult with your board, branches, or others as needed. If you are not sure whether your library's system membership is shared among multiple locations (for example, among multiple schools within your school district), please contact the Illinois Heartland Library System for that information prior to voting.

VOTING DEADLINE: 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, MAY 15, 2012

If you are the one person voting on behalf of your member library (and all of its branches or locations), follow this link, to cast your member library's vote:

Association for Rural and Small Libraries Conference

If you work in a small  and/or rural library, there is a conference for you.  The Association for Rural and Small Libraries  is holding its annual conference September 27-29, 2012 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

It is a great conference with programs designed just for you.  Meet people working in small, rural libraries and share ideas, solve problems, and learn.  All programs focus on practical, hands-on, and how-to, so you will come away with information  you can use  immediately.

For more information, go to the ARSL website at http://arsl.info/ .   Click on the “conference tab” and then “conference” on the sub-menu.

ARSL is also looking for a few good people to serve on their board.  For more information on that, check the website’s first page on how to apply to serve.  I have been there, done that, and highly recommend the experience.  You will meet people from all over the country and create your own support network for running a small and/or rural library.
